The Petanque Group was formed in 2010 by George Wallis, who had played regularly in the west country. With George’s guidance a small group of novices started to play at the terrain located in the Promenade Park. This terrain built by cooperation between Maldon U3A and Maldon District Council. The Council supplied the materials and Maldon U3A the labour. The location was the old crazy golf course, which had been in a sorry state.
Maldon U3A also gave us tuition and not long afterwards the Blackwater group played a match against Maldon and beat them. From these humble beginnings, some two years later we entered the Essex Petanque League. We soon found ourselves playing against former England Internationals. In the early days we were lucky to win an end but have much improved. These league fixtures are not played on the normal Tuesdays.
We also compete against other local U3A petanque groups.
